"this is the end".. was a song from the doors and is also the state that this blog has entered recently. to be honest, is like breaking up from your girlfriend, you know that is over but some part of your mind will not accept the situation so easily.. well, to be honest, i've moved on. bogdanel.phymacs.org will still be here as long as this server will run but will not be updated anymore. instead, you will be able to find me at asmallelf.com, my new science blog, and for now at elfspath.com, as my travel blog. the new galleries are at gallery.phymacs.org, of course, password protected (don't worry my reader, i'm sure you'll find a way to hack in - and i'm not kidding as i left some clues for friends).
it's been a pleasure talking to you!..

dear mayor,
you probably don't remember me, but we've met once at your house near bucharest in july 2006.. well, that's not important.. another not important thing, but which i would like to mention here is that i was one of your supporters when you run for mayor. you don't know that, cause i've waited 3 hours in front of the bvb to see what i can do for you, but you didn't showed. that doesn't matter either, and for those who think it matters.. well, to say it in your words, fuck them =).
what really matters is why bucharest is so lame. and i don't blame you. it's entirely your predecessors' fault. but you have the power and the people that can change things around. i've met one of your advisers. young guy, full of potential. that's why i think the words written below might reach you. i'm writing from the balcony of some hostel in vienna, and sir, i've been traveling for about two weeks through europe's capitals to reach to this conclusion: bucharest is by far the lamest.
compared to budapest:
well, budapest has the danube crossing the town. that's fine with me. but if you take out the danube, you'll find a very tourist friendly city. as i was living in the center i'm telling, that i haven't seen one traffic jam in three days. not one. i know bucharest wasn't built this way, but a small center tax applied to all cars shouldn't help to clean the air a little bit. also green. minutes away from the center of the city there's a huge park (anonymous castle, if you've been there). with a lake, with spaces for dogs with everything. the perfect place for a traveler to rest after a tiring trip. there are also tourist info shops, and small free maps to be taken (when osmond, a friend from hong kong came, i've spend 15 lei on a map for him. and it was a lousy one. lucky that i had that gps device which i gave to him to see the city). and what about a website for tourists? about this, maybe i can help. and for god's sake, do a stupid tourist card, valid for 3 days, so that anyone can jump in any tram, bus, trolley or subway and visit the museums for free. in budapest it was 4800 ft. thats about 90 lei. i'm sure if it would be issued by the city hall you would be able to gather some money to the local budget to finance tourist-related activities (like training some guides that could show people the city).
compared to bratislava:
although i spend little time in bratislava, i was pleasantly surprise (although my poor review) of how tourists are treated. you can see tourist shops everywhere. nice schedules placed near public transportation stations (which in bucharest is an utopia =) ). international inscriptions. yes. they had at least german along with slovenian writings. again they have the danube, but i think, in bucharest there is lacul morii. couldn't hurt to put some make-up over it's face and make it a little bit commercial.
compared to prague:
i should laugh first. as i said, prague is the most tourist friendly place. one idea that i've stole was to put near every park where dogs are allowed, small poles with free paper bags for dog due. and to put a fine on whoever lets his dog's due on the street. maybe there is, but for sure it is not enforced. although, instead of mr. prigoana lousy water cars that try to cool down the streets of the city, maybe you should get this czech cars, that spray the water like a small rain. instead of directly splashing water on the pedestrians (as it happens now: most of the water gets on your feet if you're "lucky" to meet prigoana's cars.. don't say that if you're a woman, you get some samples of romanian driving speech), spray in the air that water and nobody would be bother. as above i was talking about guides. in prague, there's a meeting point in the center, where daily, guides for almost every language (and trust me, you don't need so many: english, french, italian, spanish, portugese, russian, chinese.. and maybe some language from old yugoslavia) take tourists, for a fair fee, around the city using public transportation means. ohh, and one more thing: do something with the stray dogs. in all these cities i haven't seen one. to hell with fake animal protection association that know only how to eat money from the budget. it's a shame that bucharest, at almost 2 years after eu integration, still has huge packs of dogs wondering the streets.
compared to vienna:
the above apply to vienna also. but there was something here, that triggered this letter. a huge film festival organized exactly in front of the city hall. a huge screen, with huge speakers were attached to the face of the building (which looks 1000 times better than bucharest one) and from july till september daily you can watch a movie. don't have to tell you how crazy the atmosphere was there. thousands of people, most of them tourists, paying good money for food and drinks, hours before the movie starts. and another thing. the city hall is well represented there. on each flier, the mayor has a few words to say. don't have to be a genius to see that this is a great event that you can organize. don't lean your ear to old school festival organizers. try the new school way. like vienna does. and not only in summer, but also during winter, when i saw, in front of the city hall a nice amusement park (with skating, winter games, boiled wine and the whole winter package).
from vienna now, tired from writing,

Thefreeline @ day -- / open letter to mister oprescu
hello,
i have not made it to bucharest to date, but i have been to romania 5 times and counting. my wife is from romania. it is a beautiful country with a deep culture, much unlike what we find here in the united states. romania has something unique to offer, not just the lure of vampire seeking idiots, but something real. unfortunately, romania lacks "customer service."
on all 5 trips that i have taken to romania, rarely do i return with "touristy" gifts for all of my friends and family. there are two reasons for this. 1) there is a lack of market for tourists, meaning, romania fails to highlight it's wonderful qualities, it's beautiful landscapes, it's old world charm; the characteristics that make it such a desirable place to visit. 2) in most retail places, when i have attempted to purchase something, i am rudely welcomed by the sales associates. i do not like shopping in general, and surely will not purchase something if i do not feel welcomed to be your customer. romanian retailers do not realize that success depends on luring customers to purchase your products. you depend on us, not the other way around. this is a complaint i have heard often about people traveling within romania.
this response is not meant to insult, but to offer constructive criticism. i love romania and have made an eternal connection to your country through my own family. but i would like to see romania grow and prosper.
bogdan, i hope your words reach someone who can help make these changes, and i hope they see the truth in what you say. romania is worth so much more than what your political system currently offers. good luck!
shiny and new. yap. it's me. it's not like i had time to update my software package (god now, it's the last thing on my list for the next two weeks).
i'm shiny and new cause i'm writing this post from my brand new dell xps m1330 notebook. you'd say, like all my friends, why another laptop (i already own a compaq n410c and a eeepc). well, cause both of them run linux, both of them have under average performance, and while they did their job pretty well until now, i needed a change. and i don't regret it. =)
the difference? well, first in speed. this dell has a 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo. which is a lot faster than both the old ones together. as a bonus from dell, i find the 3 years waranty more than enough (my god.. will i live that long? =) ), a nice accesory package: remote control, good headphones, tons of software - including windows vista basic - and a very sexy outfit for the unit. now, for those of you who decide to purchase this notebook, you should keep in mind that the first thing to do is to update the drivers - you'll find a nice utility pre-installed - cause there are some problems, especially with the sound card - a Sigma Tel High Definition board.
another nice touch is the conectivity: wifi, bluetooth, two headphones (good for listening or watching a movie with the girlfriend =) ), a healthy battery life =) (if you can say healthy - about 3h40m having the wireless and browsing the web, and more than 4h30m with the wireless disabled playing warcraft 3 =)) and a nice feature called dell media center - or something like that - that let's you play multimedia files with your windows shutdown.
overall, i'll have this piece of equipment tested during my voyage through europe - which btw, is starting in less than two weeks. until next post, i'd like to show you my most played songs from my ipod - a nice statistic for those who know me:
1. Dolly Parton - Jolene (53 times)
2. Dead Can Dance - African Journey (30 times)
3. Blondie - Call Me (29 times)
4. Vlatko Stefanovski i Miroslav Tadic - Jovano, Jovanke (23 times)
5. Bregovici i Kayah - To nie ptak (21 times)
6. Beck - Loser (19 times)
7. Gogol Bordello - Shy Kind of Guy (15 times)
8. Gogol Bordello - God Like (15 times)
9. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights (10 times)
10. Meiko Kaji - Urami Bushi (4 times)
now that i've remembered, urami bushi is a song that reminded me of some special person, birthday around this days, with whom i'm sharing a black ladybug spot =). she knows what i'm talking about, but never reads this blog. for her, the following lyrics:

Hana yo Kirei to, Odaterare, / You're beautiful, you're the flower, i praise you.
Saite Mitanara, Sugu Chirasareru. / But if you bloom, i will get you scattered.
Baka-na, Baka-na, / Stupid. So stupid.
Baka-na On'na no... Urami-bushi. / I go so stupid singin' my grudge blues.
Saite Mitanara, Sugu Chirasareru. / But if you bloom, i will get you scattered.
Baka-na, Baka-na, / Stupid. So stupid.
Baka-na On'na no... Urami-bushi. / I go so stupid singin' my grudge blues.
as i said in that short description, i'm not a rocker. i don't have big boots, i don't wear dark clothes and i don't wear my hair long. until two weeks ago, when i found out that pisi bought tickets to white snake, i didn't know that there was a band with that name.
after a boring day at work, at 6 and something i've went to pick up pisi from europa house and headed for romexpo. all went well until we had to buy some money replacements (they don't allow you to use real money inside for buying stuff) and to actually buy, with the small plastic coins, the awaited beverages (they don't allow you to bring inside anything to eat or drink, so you have to get them from their own tents).
i'm mentioning this because the queues were huge. i've spend more than 20 minutes to get the plastic coins. that was nothing compared to the heat, sweat, bad small, and bad attitude at the beverage tent. it took almost 40 minutes and surviving two farts =) at that queue to get only some coke.
never mind that, all is well when end well. as i had some good ticket (10x again pisi), i was pretty close to stage and enjoyed some good performances of def leppard (you can see in the movie below) and white snake. the concert lasted almost 4 hours and it was definitely worthy.
some inside views: it was nice to see parents together with their children enjoying the same music, it was nice that when david coverdale (the lead singer of white snake) announced white snake's 30th anniversary the crowed started to sing "happy birthday" (in english of course), it was nice to see live, for the first time in my life, a guitar solo (doug aldrich and red beach - n.p.: it was not "my bitch" as you understood =) ).
last and this time least, i've bough a t-shirt, size m, with "too good to be bad" tour on the back and white snake logo in front. the rule is the same as in ternipe!'s case: convince me through your comments to give you the t-shirt. by the way, emma didn't leave a valid email address so she lost ternipe's t-shirt. post your comments to get that one also.
p.s:
n.p. = note for pisi =)

Bogdanel @ white snake and def leppard
ok. you've won. i'll send you an email on the address you've left for shipping details. be aware that i'm able to ship this t-shirt only in europe =). take care! and rock on!!!
Kopilutz @ white snake and def leppard
Comment.Can u compare me now?
Bogdanel @ white snake and def leppard
right my man, so to speak. i need one more comment (at least) to have something to compare you with =).
Kopilutz @ white snake and def leppard
I was there, i saw Coverdale liking his fingers, i heard solo guitar, i even made small conversation with a "semi manelist" girl in order to receive some good pics with aldrich....so, i'm your man!..so to speak ;-)
romania got kicked out of the competition (uefa euro 2008). as usual, this wasn't a big surprise. after a disapointing game with italy, where even though we had the chance of defeating the world champion, we've thrown our chance like a football over the transversal, in the last game, that should have been the easiest (played against nederlands second team, and in theory, being the ones with better chances of going further) we've surrounded ourselves to a far superior motivated team (and heck, it beats me why it happened).

to tell you the truth, at mutu's goal, i was jumping around the room for 10 seconds, and immediately after opening the "post subject" form on this website with my first words: "goooaaal mutuuu! i'll be back with more news." as i was searching for the "proceed" button, pirlo (i think, or toti whatever) pushed the ball faster than me the mouse, and there, i lost my enthusiasm.
all for all, this post is called bijelo - crveno ( i always mix the "i" and the "j", so i'm hoping that my two croatian readers forgive me =) ) so it's about croatia's game with turkey. without any doubt, croatia will crush the turkish team, who recently showed us a nice game against czech republic. to support the team i have this picture below (found on some blog from 2006 fifa's world cup). enjoy the game!

p.s. i forgot. today, after the spanish lesson i will send an email to emma (hope the email address is the right one), as she was the only one posting a comment on my previous post. the t-shirt is yours.
btw, as i have some spare (new) kingston so-dimm 1gb ddr, i'm waiting suggestions for the next contest. it's yours to win it =).
p.p.s. xfish is now compatible with safari =).

so i have internet =). yeei.
why i wasn't watching the game? i was at ternipe. i want to thank Dacia History Students Association for offering me the opportunity (and a nice ticket) and for their girls that entertain so well the audience (to bad that the camera was at my sister - but i'll ask petru or remus for some pics).
here's an "insight" =).
i'd like to dedicate this song to kreso (english spelling is kresho), one of my elf's friends, who works in that indian store in zagreb and who asked me once for some romanian gypsy music. take care man.
also, i have a TerniPE! t-shirt, size M, which i'd like to give to one of my readers. so please, comment and give me ideas on how to get rid of it. i can ship it, but only around europe.
peace!

i was expecting some goals. at least one. but i guess, overall, it's a good thing that we stood up against france without getting a goal. i'll post a few pictures that i found on yahoo's eurosport. enjoy =).

=). and a funny one:

i had some problems today:
first, i wanted to get a tv tuner. but the one i got (although the most expensive at the emag shop) didn't work on linux. and windows is not an option for me. not at all =). so, this tuner goes to my sister =).
ok. my roommate has a tv tuner and we spend 40 minutes to build an antenna from my secret receipt =): one aluminum clothes hanger (the one you get from the dry cleaner), a piece of coaxial cable ( the same length as the width of the hanger) which will make the impedance adaptation loop, and another piece of coaxial cable to connect it to the tuner.
skipping the technical details, there was a goal, from penalty, in the 4th minute, after emanuel pogatetz's fault on ivica olic. the second half is starting so i'm letting you view this short movie i found on youtube:
update 2:
second half ended with regret that my 2 - 0 from yesterday's post didn't come true. well, that's life. and sincerely, austria dominated the second half. as a bloop of the romanian commenter: "dobar den" (he wanted to say "dobar dan" .. i wonder if "den" is something..).
as i was writing this, i noticed something pretty annoying: my small elf (from the logo) was used by orange in a commercial*. i'll search it on youtube and give it to you. but i don't like it too much. bad orange.
* a few posters with drawings of my elf are displayed on orange iride's ccr message board.

as i was writing this, i noticed something pretty annoying: my small elf (from the logo) was used by orange in a commercial*. i'll search it on youtube and give it to you. but i don't like it too much. bad orange.
* a few posters with drawings of my elf are displayed on orange iride's ccr message board.

ok. first, let me make this clear: i'm not a football fan. so why the small euro 2008 logo and the branding on the head of my small elf? well, simple. today was the first day from the european championship, and in quite a while, is our national team first participation in this kind of event (after missing the 2004 european championship and 2006 world cup).
long story short, my two favorite teams in this competition are romania (of course =) ) and croatia (a small beautiful country that i felt in love with =) ). as i'm a little tired, i'll end this post with my quess for tomorrow's game, austria - croatia 0 - 2 =). more comments tomorrow. until then, here's the official song: shaggy - like a superstar.
